A Unique Stay at Hotel Astoria in Kotor

Recently I was fortunate to visit the amazing country of Montenegro. I based myself in both Herceg Novi and Kotor and whilst I was in Kotor, I stayed at the 4 star boutique Hotel Astoria. I really liked this hotel and if you are after something different, then you will be assured of a unique stay at Hotel Astoria.

The Hotel Astoria is located right inside the city walls, so you are right in amongst the action of Kotor. The old town is a very popular destination for tourists, with many cruise ships parking in the harbour so passengers can explore the town. Kotor’s old town is a UNESCO world heritage site having been built around the 12th century. Most of the medieval buildings are largely in tact and are functional with many business residing inside.

Hotel Astoria

The stylish boutique hotel is beautifully furnished in a baroque style, reminiscent of medieval times. The building itself is steeped in history, being a former Palace, dating back to the 13th century. There are still some original features left intact, such as the exposed stone walls found throughout. The Astoria also offers a quality restaurant, lounge bar and an outdoor terrace during the summer months.

The rooms

There are only nine rooms at this hotel and kudos to the design team. By having a smaller amount of rooms, it allows for each room to enjoy spacious surrounds. I stayed in a superior room (the Delta room) and indeed it was incredibly spacious. The room had three distinct areas, the living room, bedroom and bathroom. The room was well appointed with a luxury look and feel to it. Each room is based on a letter from the Greek alphabet, with ancient lettering adorning the walls. The room was well equiped with all that you would expect from a boutique hotel, such as mini bar, robes, slippers, free wifi and toiletries.

The bathroom has a stunning fit out with marble, chandelier lights and a multifunction shower. The Delta room is at the back of the hotel and overlooks part of the city wall. I chose this side of the hotel due it’s quietness as it does not face the busy square at the front.

Dining

The outdoor terrace is very busy during the summer months and offers full table service and an a la carte menu. I enjoyed sitting there in the afternoons with a cocktail or a dessert. When it gets sunny, the umbrellas are extended to provide shade. It’s a really lovely place to relax and people watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel Astoria and I feel that this hotel would suit the solo traveller, couples and the business traveller. It has a great location just inside the city walls, with stylish surrounds and immaculate spacious rooms.
